Nigel Shafran

Nigel Shafran is a British photographer specialising mostly in Fine Art Photography, he is also an an ex-fashion photographer. His household photography is very simple but taking quite a lot of care about the composition. This work is giving me very mixed emotions, I am not sure if I like it or not. I wanted to include Shafran into my researches as his work is slightly what I am trying to achieve for my Domestic section. I want to look at my every day surroundings in a different perspective through the lens. My massive idea for now is to go into macro shots. I would like to show my surroundings in a very close up way so it will make the viewers think about my work and try figure out what it is rather than find them as just normal boring images. Shafran’s photography is very simple and straight forward, there is not much meaning behind his work, through my eyes. His work makes me almost question myself why these images exist, why something so simple can make it’s way to me through millions of amazing photographs. In the other hand I am thinking about the message behind those images, I thought there wasn’t any major message but if the simple images are this popular and great then what is the message that I could be missing?

The images shown below are some of Shafran’s household photography, everyone would probably respond it them very differently. When I look at them they just make me feel like it’s my surroundings and maybe that is what the message is. Shafran is just trying to make his work relate to any middle class people and their every day lives.
