Compare and Contrast

To begin with it was hard to find the artists that would perfectly suit my first photoshoot ideas but at the same time push me forward into developing it. John Davies is an urban photographer, a British landscape photographer which is not exactly my favourite but there are some interests that I have in his work the second chose to compare Davies with was Todd Hido who is an American photographer that work I am absolutely in love with which I will talk about about. My decision was quite obvious, I wanted to compare two artists that are completely different but at the same time there is something that links them together. Davies’ work is simple and straight forward, the images that I am focusing on are his photographs of the city. Hido’s work seems a lot more mysterious which shows a small spaced landscapes took through his car windows in which you can see the steam which he wipes to focus his image on a certain place or object. The two artists are indeed very different, both of their work show landscapes what links them to the same kind of photographers but Davies shows more of an open city landscape to which anybody could relate to as Hido uses an open big space like a country and fields to just capture a small piece of it and also add steam to it so you can really just see a little bit that he wants to show, unlike Davies who includes many details in his work. He also works in black and white what makes the details stand out even more than the colour images by Hido. Even though Hido works in colour he tries to work with very neutral colours, he doesn’t make his images bright and standing out but instead they are dark with a hint of certain colour. To compare those two artists would be quite hard although they both work with landscape. They are both very different places, colours, techniques and ideas and Hido’s work looks like it is much more thought about than Davies’ photographs which you could also say that they just random snaps but they cannot be as he works with large format cameras and the cannot photoshop his work, he does also has to think about settings of his camera as well as the place, reflections and light. Davies’ work is also known more as documentary photography as the places he photographs make history, they save the image of a place that could change dramatically throughout years. Hido’s photographs are more of an abstract art, they give you a dark fairytale feeling. Very mysterious scenes which make you want to see more of that certain place, it feels like he isn’t including enough space in his images which is what makes it magical. At the end I am happy to chose these two photographers because they inspire my further work in their own separate ways.
